Pocketwatch Games has been around since 2005, handcrafting the finest games out of all natural ingredients, including, but not limited to, caribou hide and rock salt.
Pocketwatch Games was founded in 2005 by game designer Andy Schatz. In those days, the "indie games" movement was just beginning, and like most other solo developers, Andy Schatz was making games more for passion than profit.
The first game -- Wildlife Tycoon: Venture Africa -- received a suprise nomination for the 2006 IGF Grand Prize and sold nearly 100,000 copies, largely in retail boxes. The followup game, another ecosystem simulator caleld Venture Arctic, didn't fare so well, nearly putting the company out of business.
After some lean times, Schatz began prototyping a game concept that he had been imagining for years: Monaco: What's Yours Is Mine. Monaco went on to win both the Grand Prize and Excellence in Design awards at the 2010 IGF, the company began to grow into its current form. Andy Nguyen came on board as Level Designer, QA Lead, and Community Manager. Austin Wintory composed the soundtrack, and Adam deGrandis returned as an artist. Monaco launched in April, 2013, and has since sold almost 2 million copies via Steam, XBLA, and Humble Bundle.
Pocketwatch Games is now working on the highly anticipated Real-Time-Strategy game Tooth and Tail with the same core team that made Monaco. Tooth and Tail is already winning awards and was described by Kotaku as "Absolutely Spectacular". Tooth and Tail launches on September 12th, 2017. Pre-orders are now available on Steam, GOG, and PS4.Bio - Andy Schatz, Founder
Andy Schatz has been a leader in the indie game revolution since 2005. Upon leaving the AAA game space, Andy founded Pocketwatch Games, a company dedicated to making complex but approachable games that eschew mass market aesthetics. Most famous for the multi-million copies sold heist game Monaco: What’s Yours Is Mine, Pocketwatch Games is currently finishing development on their “distilled” Real-Time Strategy game, Tooth and Tail.
Schatz acts as Designer, Programmer, Writer, and Creative Director for all of his titles. His designs typically feature complex AI-driven systems driven by simple controls and user interfaces.
Schatz’s first game as an indie, Wildlife Tycoon: Venture Africa, was an ecosystem simulator that went on to be nominated for the 2006 Independent Games Festival Grand Prize. The followup to that game, Venture Arctic, explored Inuit folklore and sculpture while simulating the lives of arctic animals, and was called Sim Game of the year by the premier indie game site, Game Tunnel.
He entered his next game, Monaco: What’s Yours Is Mine, into the 2010 Independent Games Festival after just 15 weeks of work, and it went on to win both the Excellence in Design and Grand Prize awards and receive glowing praise from across the industry. PC Gamer described Monaco as “one of the best co-op games of all time” and IGN called it “One of the most unique and addicting games of 2013”.
Andy is also known as a public speaker and writer, having hosted the awards ceremony of the IGF on 5 occassions. He has written articles for Game Developer Magazine, PCGamer, Gamasutra, and other publications.
Pocketwatch Games is based in San Diego, CA, where Schatz grew up. He attended Amherst College, and received a degree in Computer Science and Fine Arts in the year 2000.
